For Erwin Azizi, Deputy Director of the Porsche Club, nothing comes in betwee and him and his car. He spills the beans on his passion for fast cars, only Porches mind you, to Ezilea Omar.

Erwin Azizi zooms right up to the main entrance of The Gardens mall in Kuala Lumpur in his Porsche 911 GT3 RS, his presence probably heard from some miles away. All eyes were on the sleek white vehicle emitting the thunderous sound. I could almost hear their unanswered thoughts…Who is this fellow? Is he a celebrity? Are they shooting a car commercial?

A quick photo shoot later, we were sipping drinks in the cool embrace of the mall. In one look, Erwin may project himself as a player but this dude is totally in love. With his car, that is (whom he lovingly calls ‘Mildred’). The Deputy Director of Porsche Club Malaysia is one of the youngest members of the esteemed club of Porsche lovers and of course, owners.

“I owned my first Porsche in 2004 after having accomplished my postgraduate in Global Banking and Finance specialising in Private Equity Investments. Whilst undertaking my Masters degree, I was also involved in a partnership selling cars illustrating my first foray into the world of entrepreneurship,” he says.

In fact, his love for Porsches was instilled in him at a very young age.

“My grandfather used to take me on drives on old estate roads when I was about seven or eight years old. I was scared but the adrenaline rush got to me. Both my grandfather and father were race drivers during their younger years,” Erwin reveals.

Erwin spent 11 years in the United Kingdom and came back to Kuala Lumpur just over two years ago. “My life away from home started whilst I was still young. At 10 years of age, I left for Singapore to pursue my secondary education where I boarded in an international school.

Those were my formative years and one, which has helped me become who I am today.

“Having great parents who are supportive of most of my endeavours has allowed me to learn via experience and wisdom on how to appreciate life and have respect for others. My father, Azizi Yom Ahmad is a businessman involved in property development locally and internationally whilst my mother, Laili Hazimah, is a housewife and the backbone of my family,” says Erwin, adding that he has a brother named Erwan and a sister, Elissa.

Currently Erwin is a Private Equity fund manager working for Malaysian Ventures Management Incorporated, a subsidiary of AmBank Group. “Prior to this I was also involved in private equity investments in London for two years managing the funds of wealthy Arab families.”

Erwin is currently serving as the Deputy Director for Porsche Club Malaysia. “It’s been great, we organise track days for Porsche owners as well as have club drives within and outside of Malaysia. Recently we completed a 4200km drive to Vientiane, Laos in December 2008,” he discloses.

In fact, Erwin and his car have travelled all over Europe from Spain to Italy to Belgium!

“This may be the Porsche with the highest mileage!

“I am also involved in the Malaysian Super Series and the Merdeka Millennium Endurance race. In addition, my interest in motorsports extends to karting, which I do regularly during the weekends,” he continues.

“It’s great to be part of the club. We would arrange a convoy to some remote parts of the country like Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Broga in Semenyih (the best spot for secluded winding roads) and Kuala Selangor to look for ayam bakar, for example,” says Erwin who would even wake up in the wee hours for a drive.

He hopes to be president of the Club one day, provided “he has done enough for the club.”
“My principal in life is to work hard, work smart and play hard. If you believe in something and work for it, you will achieve it,”
he concludes.
